#6: Suggested theme "climate change"

Dear all

re: your email about a theme for the next annual gathering (on July 11, 2010). How about "climate change"? Though this may sound a little high sounding to some, climate change is probably the big issue faced by humankind this century. It affects all walks of life. And most of all, it concerns science, and I believe every science graduate has a role to play and to contribute to the world's well-being. Just a thought.

#4: Next gathering on July 11, 2010

Dear Coordinators,

To celebrate the Faculty of Science 70th Anniversary, we have successfully located coordinator for each graduate year as far back as 1967, which is a valuable asset to all of us.

At the Celebration dinner on November 15, 2009, Prof Allan Cheung will announce that the HKU Science Alumni Association ("HKUSAA") is interested to continue the celebration with annual dinners every year thereafter. I am one of the HKUSAA.Executive Committee members.

Tentatively, the 2010 gathering will be held on July 11, 2010, which sounds like seventy one in Chinese (for celebrating the 71st anniversary). The HKUSAA will contact you to arrange further details.

Hope to have your continued support.

Regards,
Edward Sin

Dear Edward and Bill,

Thanks for the email and the good idea.

I am keen to support the idea of holding annual gathering for the Science alumni. ...

I could help to announce this at the Nov. 15 celebration dinner and follow by email to all coordinators.

Allan

Hi Prof Cheung,

Alumni gatherings are always one of our HKUSAA's mission.

Thanks to Edward's great enthusiasm, most hindrance are cleared as Edward can oversee some of the administrative works.

Let's see what can we do to make things happen.

Dear Prof. A. Cheung,

I have bought my ticket for the Anniversary dinner, and shall sit in the BSc 71 table.

I am still keen to promote the idea of holding annual gathering for the Science alumni.

I would propose the following formula for setting the date:

a) July 11, 2010 for the 71th anniversary up to July 19, 2018 for the 79th anniversary.

b) August 10, 2019 for the 80th anniversary up to August 19, 2028 for the 89th anniversary

c) September 10, 2029 for the 90th anniversary up to September 19, 2038 for the 99th anniversary

d) Starting from the 100th anniversary, it may be the 100th day of the year, and so on.

I would suggest organizing the gathering using the following approach:

1) The gathering may be just a dinner function at a venue to be suggested.

2) We shall call for bidding/suggestion for the venue. Ideally the capacity of the venue can cater for the flexibility of last few days' increase of say 50 participants. Charges should be kept low at the commonly affordable range of $200-$300 to allow more alumni to join.

3) We also ask for bidding of suitable presentation or promotion talk (we may select 3 talks at the most).

4) Depending on the nature of the bidding, we may allow the bidder to hold the entire function, or the HKUSAA holding it and monitor the event. I have informed Bill Ho of the HKUSAA that I can serve as contact point for the alumni.

5) If by March 31 of the year, there is no suitable bidder interested in organizing anything, we shall skip it and allow the year to go by without gathering.

If you agree with my proposal, I shall notify all coordinators by email before November 15, and attend to answer all inquiries on that day.

I shall be glad to discuss the idea further. Please call me at 9379-3240 when you are free.

Regards,
Edward Sin
