#14: Science 73rd Anniversary Dinner on July 13, 2012

Dear HKU Science Alumni,

In 2009, the HKU Faculty of Science celebrated its 70th Anniversary with a year-long of activities, climaxed by a dinner on November 15, 2009 at the Hong Kong Cnvention and Exhibition Centre, which was attended by 900 guests, alumni, students and staff.

The Faculty of Science published the 70th Anniversary Commemorative Booklet for the occasion. If you have not received a copy, you may contact the Faculty office at Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building in HKU to see if there are spare copies.

On July 11, 2010, we celebrated Science Faculty's 71st Anniversary under the theme 理壯七一. The function was attended by 74 participants.

Last year, we waived the celebration of the 72nd Anniversary to give way to HKU's Centenary celebration.

This year, we would like to celebrate the 73rd Anniversary on July 13, 2012 as the date rhyme with Seventy-Three 七十三 in Chinese.

The theme of our 2012 gathering is Science education under the new 3-3-4 education system. HKU Science Faculty said it had prepared well for the change.

subject Tour on August 27, 2011 (morning) to visit electricity generation plant

Dear Science Coordinators,

Following the Japan nuclear radiation leakage incidence, there has been wide discussion on the environmental concern of electricity generation.

On behalf of HKU Science Alumni Association, I contacted HK Electric Holdings Limited (now called Power Assets Holdings Limited 電能實業有限公司) to arrange a tour to visit its power plant at Lamma Island, which in a single site has a combination of generators including fuel powered, wind powered, solar powered as well as combined cycle units.

With courtesy from HK Electric, a free trip is arranged for 35 persons to visit the power plant at Lamma Island on August 27 2011 at 9:30 am to 12:45 pm with assembly and dismissal at Ap Lei Chau.

I can now accept application for tickets from Science Coordinators on a first come first served basis.

Each email may request for a maximum of 2 tickets.

You may submit your application NOW !

Regards,
Edward Sin

#7: HKU Science Bricks Group

(An updated version of Post #7 is recorded under Post #11)

Refer HKU Website about the Bricks Donation Campaign to raise fund for the HKU Centennial Campus development project:
http://www3.hku.hk/bricks/index.html

We understand that many science alumni have donated bricks. So we form a HKU Science grouping with the view of clustering the separate bricks together to form a 萬理長城 (in fact, we have almost 10,000 science alumni by now).

HKU has kindly designed the HKU Science Special Donation Form to facilitate us to make the donation. Please refer website at:
http://www3.hku.hk/bricks/donation_form_HKUScience.pdf

As soon as donation is made, the donors’names of the HKU Science Group are updated to the HKU website at the following address:
http://www3.hku.hk/bricks/bricks_group.php#HKUScience

Moreover, if our Science Bricks grouping can gather 30 bricks together, we shall earn a COMPLIMENTARY brick (valued at HK$38,000), which will be inscribed with words "HKU Science" with all related bricks grouped under it.

Up till now, bricks grouped under the HKU Science grouping are:

000001
Individual brick of Bill Ho, President of HKU Science Alumni Association

000010
Individual brick of Stanley Chu, Founding President of HKU Science Alumni Association

#6: Suggested theme "climate change"

from B.Y. Lee
date Tue, Nov 24, 2009
subject Re: HKU: Future Annual gatherings for Science alumni

Dear all

re: your email about a theme for the next annual gathering (on July 11, 2010). How about "climate change"? Though this may sound a little high sounding to some, climate change is probably the big issue faced by humankind this century. It affects all walks of life. And most of all, it concerns science, and I believe every science graduate has a role to play and to contribute to the world's well-being. Just a thought.

Regards.

#4: Next gathering on July 11, 2010

Dear Coordinators,

To celebrate the Faculty of Science 70th Anniversary, we have successfully located coordinator for each graduate year as far back as 1967, which is a valuable asset to all of us.

At the Celebration dinner on November 15, 2009, Prof Allan Cheung will announce that the HKU Science Alumni Association ("HKUSAA") is interested to continue the celebration with annual dinners every year thereafter. I am one of the HKUSAA.Executive Committee members.

Tentatively, the 2010 gathering will be held on July 11, 2010, which sounds like seventy one in Chinese (for celebrating the 71st anniversary). The HKUSAA will contact you to arrange further details.

Hope to have your continued support.

Regards,
Edward Sin

Dear Edward and Bill,

Thanks for the email and the good idea.

I am keen to support the idea of holding annual gathering for the Science alumni. ...

I could help to announce this at the Nov. 15 celebration dinner and follow by email to all coordinators.

Allan

Hi Prof Cheung,

Alumni gatherings are always one of our HKUSAA's mission.

Thanks to Edward's great enthusiasm, most hindrance are cleared as Edward can oversee some of the administrative works.

Let's see what can we do to make things happen.

Dear Prof. A. Cheung,

I have bought my ticket for the Anniversary dinner, and shall sit in the BSc 71 table.

I am still keen to promote the idea of holding annual gathering for the Science alumni.

I would propose the following formula for setting the date:

a) July 11, 2010 for the 71th anniversary up to July 19, 2018 for the 79th anniversary.

b) August 10, 2019 for the 80th anniversary up to August 19, 2028 for the 89th anniversary

c) September 10, 2029 for the 90th anniversary up to September 19, 2038 for the 99th anniversary

d) Starting from the 100th anniversary, it may be the 100th day of the year, and so on.

I would suggest organizing the gathering using the following approach:

1) The gathering may be just a dinner function at a venue to be suggested.

2) We shall call for bidding/suggestion for the venue. Ideally the capacity of the venue can cater for the flexibility of last few days' increase of say 50 participants. Charges should be kept low at the commonly affordable range of $200-$300 to allow more alumni to join.

3) We also ask for bidding of suitable presentation or promotion talk (we may select 3 talks at the most).

4) Depending on the nature of the bidding, we may allow the bidder to hold the entire function, or the HKUSAA holding it and monitor the event. I have informed Bill Ho of the HKUSAA that I can serve as contact point for the alumni.

5) If by March 31 of the year, there is no suitable bidder interested in organizing anything, we shall skip it and allow the year to go by without gathering.

If you agree with my proposal, I shall notify all coordinators by email before November 15, and attend to answer all inquiries on that day.

I shall be glad to discuss the idea further. Please call me at 9379-3240 when you are free.

Regards,
Edward Sin
